Do Not Over-Brush Your Teeth

Hello Perfectionists,

This one’s for you.

In today’s fast-paced world, where we often strive for perfection in every aspect of our lives, it’s easy to fall into the trap of overdoing things – even when it comes to something as seemingly simple as brushing your teeth.

While the intention behind over-brushing may be to achieve a cleaner and brighter smile, the reality is that excessive brushing can have detrimental effects on your oral health. After examining and treating perfection-seekers for over two decades at Mount Annan Dental, I’m going to explain the dangers of over-brushing and why it’s crucial to strike a balance:

1. Gum Recession and Sensitivity: One of the most significant risks of over-brushing is gum recession. When you brush too aggressively, you can wear down the gum tissue, causing it to pull away from the teeth. This exposes the roots of the teeth, leading to increased sensitivity, discomfort, and an elevated risk of gum disease.

2. Enamel Erosion and Tooth Damage: Your tooth enamel is the protective outer layer of your teeth. Over-brushing can erode this enamel, making your teeth more vulnerable to decay, cavities, and other issues. Once the enamel is worn down, it cannot be regenerated, putting your oral health at risk.

3. Aggravation of Existing Dental Conditions: If you already have conditions such as gingivitis or sensitive teeth, over-brushing will exacerbate these issues. The abrasive action of vigorous brushing will further irritate inflamed gums and worsen sensitivity, leading to discomfort and other complications.

4. Ineffective Plaque Removal: Contrary to popular belief, scrubbing your teeth aggressively does not necessarily result in better plaque removal. In fact, over-brushing can push plaque deeper into the gum line, making it harder to clean and increasing the risk of gum inflammation and periodontal disease.

To safeguard your oral health and maintain a radiant smile, I recommend adopting a balanced approach to brushing:

– Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean your teeth without causing damage.

– Brush in gentle, circular motions for at least two minutes, ensuring that you cover all surfaces of your teeth.

– Use a fluoride toothpaste to strengthen enamel and protect against decay.

– Avoid applying excessive pressure or using a back-and-forth scrubbing motion, as this can harm your teeth and gums.

By practicing proper brushing techniques and visiting Mount Annan Dental for regular check-ups and cleanings, you can protect your smile and prevent the hidden dangers of over-brushing. Remember, a healthy smile is a fragile lifelong investment – treat it with the care, attention and kindness it deserves.

Brush your teeth, don’t go to war with it.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Steven Krajewski
