How To Properly Brush Your Teeth

Hello,

As a dentist with over twenty years experience working on patients across different multicultural backgrounds, educational levels, family histories and personal hygiene standards, I’ve learnt not to make any assumptions, especially when it comes to basic foundational knowledge such as how to brush your teeth.

Everybody does it differently, but doing it uniquely won’t benefit you. In fact, it can hinder and damage your teeth, gums and oral health.

At Mount Annan Dental, we’re not only focused on fixing your oral health at our clinic. We’re deeply devoted to educating our patients so they’re empowered to protect their teeth everyday of their lives.

Follow these techniques and tips to do it right.

1. Choose the Right Toothbrush and Toothpaste

Selecting the right tools is the first step towards effective teeth brushing. Opt for a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head that can reach all areas of your mouth easily. Pair it with a fluoride toothpaste that suits your needs, such as one for sensitive teeth or gum health.

2. Brushing Technique

– Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against your gum line.

– Use gentle, circular motions to clean the outer and inner surfaces of your teeth.

– For the chewing surfaces, employ a back-and-forth motion.

– Don’t forget to brush your tongue gently to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.

3. Duration and Frequency

Brush your teeth for a minimum of two minutes, twice a day. Set a timer or use an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer to ensure you brush for the recommended duration. Avoid brushing too vigorously, as it can damage your tooth enamel and gums.

4. Don’t Neglect the Gum Line

Plaque buildup along the gum line can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Pay extra attention to this area by angling your toothbrush towards the gums and using gentle, circular motions to remove plaque effectively.

5. Reach Every Nook and Cranny

Ensure you clean all surfaces of your teeth, including the hard-to-reach areas. Tilt your toothbrush vertically to reach the back of your front teeth, and don’t forget to brush behind your molars.

6. Replace Your Toothbrush Regularly

Toothbrushes wear out over time, losing their effectiveness. Replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed.

7. Flossing and Mouthwash

Brushing alone cannot remove all the plaque and food particles from between your teeth. Incorporate daily flossing into your oral hygiene routine to clean these areas thoroughly. Additionally, using an antimicrobial mouthwash can help kill bacteria and freshen your breath.

8. Regular Dental Check-ups

Even with impeccable oral hygiene practices, regular dental check-ups are vital. Schedule biannual visits at Mount Annan Dental for professional cleanings, examinations, and early detection of any potential dental issues.

Proper teeth brushing techniques, combined with regular dental care, are the foundation of a healthy smile. Following these tips and techniques ensures that your oral hygiene routine is effective and contributes to optimal oral health. Remember, a beautiful smile starts with healthy teeth, and healthy teeth starts with the perfect toothbrush, toothpaste and technique.

Yours sincerely,
