Why Flossing Can Save Your Gums and Your Life

Hello from our clinic at Mount Annan Central Shopping Centre,

As peaceful and adventurous holidays across Australia have ended, and we enter into the stabilising season of school and work life, I’d like to stress the importance of maintaining consistent oral hygiene.

Let’s examine gum disease, and how it can have serious implications for your overall health. Also, let’s focus on flossing, and why it can save your life.

Firstly, gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It’s primarily caused by the buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to tooth loss and have detrimental effects on your overall health.

Research proves a strong connection between gum disease and various health conditions. Bacteria in the infected gums can enter the bloodstream and spread throughout the body, causing or exacerbating the following conditions:

   a. Heart Disease: Gum disease may increase the risk of heart disease and stroke, as bacteria in the gums contribute to the formation of plaque in the arteries, leading to blockages.

   b. Diabetes: Individuals with diabetes are more prone to gum disease, which makes it difficult to control blood sugar levels. It’s a two-way relationship that requires proper management of both conditions.

   c. Respiratory Problems: Bacteria from the mouth can be inhaled into the lungs, increasing the risk of respiratory infections such as pneumonia.

   d. Pregnancy Complications: Pregnant women with gum disease are at a higher risk of delivering premature or low birth weight babies. It is crucial for expectant mothers to prioritise their oral health.

While brushing your teeth twice a day is essential, it’s not enough to combat gum disease. Flossing plays a critical role in removing plaque and bacteria from areas that a toothbrush can’t reach, such as between the teeth and along the gum line. Incorporating daily flossing into your oral hygiene routine is a simple yet powerful way to prevent gum disease and maintain optimal oral health.

Follow these flossing tips:

   a. Use Enough Floss: Use 40 centimetres of floss, winding most of it around your middle fingers. Leave a small section to work with.

   b. Be Gentle: Gently guide the floss between your teeth using a back-and-forth motion. Avoid snapping the floss, as it can damage your gums.

c. Curve Around Each Tooth: Form a C shape with the floss and carefully slide it along the sides of each tooth. Make sure to reach below the gum line.

d. Use Clean Sections: As you move from tooth to tooth, use a clean section of floss to avoid spreading bacteria.

Taking care of your oral health is not just about having a beautiful smile; it’s crucial for your overall well-being. Gum disease is a silent threat that can have far-reaching consequences for your overall health. Understand the hidden dangers of gum disease and incorporate daily flossing into your routine. Remember, prevention is always better than cure. You can never brush or floss your teeth perfectly everyday, so regular dental check-ups and cleanings at Mount Annan Dental ensure a healthy mouth for years to come.
